Small gravel garden, Carshalton

We were contacted by the owner of this garden who had a specific gravel garden for her back garden in mind – due to a shady/sunny north facing aspect where very little would grow – and needed help in coming up with a plan to put this into practice. The owner carried out the works herself, especially as the timing of the works collided with the start of the first 2020 national lockdown. The installation of a paved path leading through the gravel and connecting the house with the garden room will follow next year.

We advised on the importance of preparing the soil: most urgently, taking up the landscape membrane to let the soil recover and ‘breath’. Then, improving the soil with composted manure to break up the clay. Plants were added and the gravel layer after planting as a mulch. A landscape membrane was put back along the future paved path. Shrubs were planted along the fences and smaller, decorative herbaceous plants, grasses and Hydrangeas were placed in the centre on the garden to define a seating area and the path.
