This north-east facing garden feels naturally secluded, with mature shrubs and trees enclosing the space and creating a calm, sheltered atmosphere. Tall conifers along the rear boundary provided strong privacy, but had to be removed due to newly acquired land beyond them which now forms an extended part of the back garden.
The main space was laid to lawn and framed by planting borders, with a generous terrace stretching across the width of the house.
The clients wanted to unlock the full potential of the garden, developing a more formal layout connecting with their home and create diverse planting which allowed for seasonal colour and more interest. The aim was to create a space that feels structured yet characterful, with interest that evolves throughout the seasons.
The garden is divided into 3 areas:
a central lawn with bordering pathways guiding movement around it and leading towards the extended rear area. The middle contains a terrace with seating area to enjoy morning sun and is surrounded by the main borders. The back contains another lawn and seating for evening sun and family gatherings. All connected with a path laid with low maintenance small sandstone setts.
Existing trees where kept wherever possible to maintain privacy and preserve the garden’s sense of depth and age.
The design also incorporates a water feature and an outdoor kitchen and subtle, feature-enhancing garden lighting.
Together, these elements create a refined, structured, and welcoming garden that supports family life, outdoor entertaining, and year-round enjoyment.
