Biodiversity-Led Naturalistic Garden – East Horsley

This project transforms a traditional domestic garden into a rich, naturalistic landscape designed to deliver measurable biodiversity net gain while providing the homeowners with an immersive, wildlife-friendly retreat.

Responding to the client’s wish to remove a large expanse of lawn, the new design introduces a dynamic planting scheme that celebrates ecological value and seasonal beauty. The generous scale of the area allowed for sweeping blocks of herbaceous perennials and ornamental grasses, chosen for their structure, movement, and exceptional support for pollinators and local wildlife. Taller species and layered planting create depth, shelter, and year-round habitat.

A simple system of gravel pathways weaves through the planting, inviting exploration and allowing easy access for maintenance without disrupting the naturalistic feel. Existing water features—including a pond and a formal water rill—have been retained and integrated, enhancing biodiversity by providing vital water sources while offering tranquil focal points within the scheme.

The result is a vibrant, uplifting garden where people, plants, and wildlife can thrive together—an inspiring example of how domestic landscapes can meaningfully contribute to local ecology while remaining deeply beautiful and enjoyable to live with.
