Modern family garden with garden room, East Molesey

This southeast-facing garden enjoys a naturally secluded atmosphere, enclosed by mature Birch trees that cast dappled shade across the rear of the space.

A newly installed garden room stretches across half of the back boundary and needed connecting with the house and new landscaping.

Near the house, an existing paved seating area offered potential for redevelopment, while the surrounding fencing needed partially replacing and the trampoline was planned for removal—opening up new opportunities for layout and planting.

The brief called for a modern, family-friendly garden that forges a stronger visual and physical connection between the house and the new garden room. The clients sought a welcoming outdoor space with renewed character and interest, including a dedicated seating area beside the garden room designed for a dining table. A second seating area was designed for gathering around a fire pit or BBQ.

With the garden originally  dominated by lawn, the design aims to introduce richer layers of planting, softening boundaries and creating new focal points throughout the space.

A gravel path with stepping stones and selected planting within the gravel zone connects the house with the garden rooms and leads around a journey through the garden along lush planting borders, the lawn and a water feature.

The new planting will help blur the edges of the garden, enhancing the sense of enclosure while adding colour, texture, and seasonal variety.

Areas of lawn were retained to preserve openness and provide space for family use, balanced by contemporary hard landscaping and carefully composed planting to achieve a fresh, inviting garden that feels both connected and cohesive.

The materials used are riven sandstone, classic gravel combined with corten steel elements to retain level changes and for the water feature to give this garden a modern and contemporary edge.
