Relaxed Country Garden in Farnham, Surrey

Set within 20 acres of beautiful Surrey countryside, this project reimagines the landscape surrounding a recently refurbished detached property in Farnham. With an east-facing rear aspect and expansive open views to both sides, the garden is designed to enhance the home’s new architecture while creating functional, inviting outdoor spaces that flow seamlessly into the wider landscape.

The existing garden featured a series of terraces stepping down from the house, leading to a swimming pool framed by a brick pier pergola. With the pool positioned at a lower level and defined by a dry-stone retaining wall, the design focused on unifying these varying levels and enriching the spaces closest to the house.

The area directly in front of the main living spaces—overlooking the pool—was developed into a refined garden of generous flowerbeds and structured lawn, creating a soft, welcoming foreground to the expansive views beyond. Hard landscaping around the house was rationalised and upgraded to create continuity between terraces, improving circulation and creating a cohesive relationship between house, pool, and garden. The swimming pool remains a key feature, while the pergola has been removed to open the space and allow for a lighter, more contemporary feel.

A new seating area was positioned further from the house, carefully placed to capture the warm afternoon and evening sun—offering a peaceful destination within the landscape. To protect planting from local wildlife and ensure the garden can thrive, the new scheme incorporates discreet measures to keep deer out without compromising the character of the setting.

At the front of the property, the redesigned entrance is enhanced with additional planting borders and improved parking, creating a more welcoming and structured arrival experience that connects harmoniously with the surrounding land.

This project brings together architecture, landscape, and countryside views to form a sophisticated yet naturalistic garden that complements both the home and its remarkable rural setting.
