This contemporary city garden was finished to a high end specification, with a contemporary garden studio at the end of the garden, corten steel edges managing level changes and forming retaining walls and paved seating areas using small clay pavers laid on edge.
A living wall forms a feature piece next to the seating area and a focal point from the house.
Set within the densely populated area of Teddington, we were appointed to create a planting design with the focus on herbaceous perennials, grasses and structural planting along the boundaries to create privacy and to support wildlife with our planting.
The brief
- Aspect of the garden is south-west facing within a city location with a mature Robinia tree and Conifers creating a strong presence within the garden space.
- The garden develops between the new extension of the Edwardian house and contemporary garden studio. Level changes are managed with corten steel steps, within are free flowering planting borders connected by Breedon gravel pathways.
Response
- Once the layout of the new planting borders had been agreed, we developed a design predominately focusing on perennials and grasses with different heights to add structure and interest throughout the seasons.
- The east facing boundary was planted with a row go pleached trees, underplanted with shade tolerant perennials and grasses, framed with an evergreen low hedge.
- The west facing boundary contains a glade of Himalayan Birch trees, with an outstanding white bark which forms contrasts with Miscanthus grasses and various perennials, again the large border is framed with a low evergreen hedge.
- The middle beds are an explosion of colour throughout spring into autumn, herbaceous perennials developing into different height and textures, ornamental grasses adding movement and reflection of the light.
- The whole planting scheme supports wildlife and pollinators such as bees, butterflies.
